BOCA RATON, Fla. – First-year head coach
Doug Neagle got his first win as a Shark as the No. 15 women's tennis team opened up the 2017 season with a 6-3 victory over Keiser Friday night in Boca Raton.
"This is the first time seeing the girls compete and I saw a lot of positives," Neagle said. "There is still work to be done but we have the whole season to go. As I coach, I want to see the girls compete 100% every time and with the team we have I know they will work hard for every single point."
The Sharks started off the doubles matches with a 1-0 advantage as Keiser did not have a third doubles team but secured the second doubles match as
Nastassia Rubel and
Simone Pratt defeated Keiser's No. 20 Teodora Stanciu and Juliana Goncalves, 8-1. Keiser got their first point of the day as No. 9 Megane Bianco and Julianna Heino defeated Liucelena Perez and
Isabella Lowrey, 8-2.
After a Keiser forfeit in the first singles match, the Sharks cemented the win after they won the next two singles matches.
Arina Sharonova got her first collegiate win after defeating Samantha Guy, 6-3, 6-1. Perez took the first set against Keiser's top player, No. 9 Megane Bianco, 6-4, before Biacno had to withdraw, giving Perez the match. Rubel got the final point for the Sharks defeating Goncalves, 6-3, 7-5.
The Sharks will be back in action on Sunday taking on No. 12 Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla. at 10:00 a.m.
